Necessary Skills for Marketing

Jun 18, 2015Digital Marketing0 comments

Technology has changed a lot of things in our lives. It’s made our personal lives easier and our business lives more organized. With all that change comes a new set of skills to learn.

Marketers today need to know how to perform across a variety of mediums. From print to social and beyond marketers are really becoming jacks-of-all-trades. Here are a few of the necessary skills for marketing today:

Know How to Code

I’m not saying that you need to create the next Facebook or be the next Bill Gates, but at least be familiar with HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript. Knowing these things will allow you to design and edit your website easier. It will allow you to make things responsive and more user-focused. From email newsletters to websites, knowing how to code will allow you to improve your marketing in the online environment. Check out my post on learning and start coding today.

Understand SEO

The world is online. People don’t go to the phonebook to find your business anymore, they Google you. Understanding Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could mean the difference between being on page one of the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) and page three. Approximately 90% or people never leave page one of Google results, knowing SEO can help you get to page one.

Analytics

If you don’t have a Google Analytics account set up for your website, stop reading and go set one up. Analytics are one of the most important pieces of your marketing toolkit today. Knowing how to interpret even the simplest analytics like source of traffic and page hits can help tremendously. For example, if I know that my site is getting a ton of direct traffic from Twitter, I will post there more often, I will probably run an ad on the platform. Knowledge is power, and analytics is knowledge.

Getting comfortable with these skills will give you the right tools to become a better marketing professional.
